Chichester will resonate with the sound of swinging saxophones as two internationally acclaimed jazz masters—Greg Abate and Alan Barnes—share the stage for an unforgettable evening of music.Greg Abate has carved out a stellar career on both sides of the Atlantic, celebrated for his fiery bebop lines and lyrical phrasing. Early in his career, Abate toured with the Ray Charles Orchestra and the Artie Shaw Band, before going on to build a reputation as one of the foremost alto saxophonists of his generation. His collaborations include two acclaimed albums with the late Phil Woods, as well as recent projects such as Magic Dance: The Music of Kenny Barron, recorded at the legendary Van Gelder Studio with Barron himself. Abate has also teamed up with Alan Barnes on the much-praised recording Birds of a Feather, a joyful dialogue of saxophone voices.
Alan Barnes, a mainstay of the British jazz scene, is renowned as one of the UK’s most versatile and decorated reed players. Equally at home on alto, baritone, and clarinet, Barnes has performed with Stan Tracey, Humphrey Lyttelton, the BBC Big Band, and the Mike Westbrook Orchestra, among many others. With over 25 British Jazz Awards to his name and two BBC Jazz Instrumentalist of the Year titles, Barnes is admired both for his virtuosity and for his wry, engaging stage presence. His discography includes duo projects with pianist David Newton, big-band outings like Barnes + Eleven, and the swinging sax showcase Barnes & O’Higgins & The Sax Section. Beyond jazz, he has recorded with artists ranging from Joe Cocker and Bryan Ferry to Björk and Van Morrison.
Together, Abate and Barnes promise a night of world-class jazz steeped in bebop, swing, and sparkling interplay. The programme will feature jazz standards, original compositions, and selections from their joint and individual projects. Audiences can expect everything from high-energy call-and-response to intimate ballads, delivered with warmth, wit, and unmatched musicianship.
