SAXON SOUND
Saxon Sound System aka Saxon Studio International was founded in Lewisham (SE-London) in 1976 by Denis Rowe and Lloyd ‘Musclehead’ Francis. The duo are of the first generation of black British youth to form sound systems in their local neighbourhoods, a natural progression for kids whose parents often threw bottle parties and shebeens at home.
Initially a lover’s rock sound that played out in the Lewisham community, Saxon got bigger and bigger in the early 1980s, thanks to entertainers by the likes of Ranking Coley, Mellow, Papa Levi, Peter King and Maxi Priest.
When dancehall arose in the 1980s, Saxon became a dancehall and clash sound system, expanding their microphone crew with Smiley Culture, Asher Senator, Roger Robin, Daddy Colonel, Tippa Irie, Daddy Sandy, Daddy Rusty, Miss Irie and Lady Di. In this era, Musclehead was known for his vast collection of dubplates and 45s that kept the dance rocking.
Saxon continued to grow internationally and the crew played dances and clashes all over the world, even winning the World Clash in 1994 and launching the careers of many singers and MC’s.
For this event, Musclehead will play a vinyl and acetate only revival set, from ska to dancehall. He is joined on the mic by Asher Senator, Senior Sandy and Daddy Colonel, three of the original Saxon MC’s.
ROOTS EXPLOSION SOUNDSYSTEM
Roots Explosion is a soundsystem crew from Bruges, Belgium that was founded in 2016. The crew consists of five core members with a common love for reggae music and soundsystem culture. Their main goal is to promote said culture and organize affordable and accessible dances for music lovers young and old. Roots Explosion is playing all kinds of Jamaican music, dubplates and homemade productions, with the emphasis on playing their hand built soundsystem like their predecessors used to do in the golden days of reggae music, when rub-a-dub riddims reigned the dance hall.
Roots Explosion has played at festivals like Couleur Café, Reggae Geel, Reggaebus Festival, Campo Solar, Humble Festival, Space Safari and Ardennes Soundsystem Weekender.
The full Roots Explosion crew will be present, playing on an updated soundsystem.
