Vanessa Collier’s sixth album, Do It My Own Way, is a soulful blend of blues, R&B, and Americana, inspired by the rich, classic Memphis sound of Stax and Hi Records. Out on Phenix Fire Records, the album is recorded on analog gear with the band in one room, giving it a warm, vintage feel. The single “Wild As a Rainstorm” dives deep into soul, encouraging women and those who feel overlooked to embrace their own path. The track, with its powerful groove and horns, even caught the attention of Spotify's Retro Soul playlist.
Reflecting on the album, Collier explains, “It’s a warmer, darker record,” aimed at capturing the essence of older soul, blues, and R&B. Do It My Own Way is packed with Memphis-inspired horn arrangements and emotive sax solos, while songs like “Take Me Back” and the funky opener “Elbow Grease” channel the energy and storytelling of classic soul.
The gospel-tinged track “Rosetta” pays homage to one of Collier’s heroes, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, recognizing her influence on music icons like Elvis and Chuck Berry. Meanwhile, album closer “Warrior” honors the resilience of women, inspired by Collier’s mother, and powerfully concludes an album full of messages of strength and defiance.
A versatile musician, Collier handled the songwriting, production, and instrumental arrangements for the album. Do It My Own Way features legendary Hi Records organist Rev. Charles Hodges and frequent collaborators like guitarist Laura Chavez. Collier’s vision is clear: to stay true to herself and her art, pushing against industry norms to define her own path.
