Saturday Workshop for Teachers

A new workshop of our Saturday Workshops for Teachers programme: "Workshop Abstract: Practical Ideas for Teaching and Assessing Writing”, a session by Anthony Naso.

All participants receive a certificate of attendance. International House is a member of AISLI (Associazione Italiana Scuola di Lingue), Accredited Body for the training of School Teaching Staff (Decree 177/2000 and Directive 90/2003 of the Ministry of Public Education).

Abstract

Writing is often one of the most overlooked and daunting skills for both teachers and students, owing to its multifaceted structure, varied genres, and diverse communicative contexts. However, as with any skill, writing cannot be passively absorbed—it must be actively taught.

This engaging workshop is designed to provide teachers with innovative strategies for teaching and assessing writing effectively. Participants will explore diverse approaches to teaching writing that can be seamlessly integrated into Cambridge English exam preparation. Emphasis will be placed on creating lessons that are both communicative and interactive, optimizing the experience for both students and teachers.

The workshop will also deepen teachers' understanding of writing assessment across CEFR levels, with a focus on the Cambridge English Writing Assessment Scales, providing insights into practical methods for evaluating and supporting students’ writing development in the classroom.

The workshop is structured into two key parts:

· Part 1 addresses the challenges of teaching writing, the importance of genre analysis, and provides practical ideas and resources to support effective teaching.

· Part 2 explores the complexities of assessing writing, introduces the Cambridge English Writing Assessment Scales and its criteria, and offers hands-on activities and resources for assessing writing in the classroom.

By the end of the session, attendees will leave with a toolkit of practical ideas and strategies to teach and assess writing with confidence, helping their students develop this essential skill for academic and real-world success.

Nino is a Teacher and Teacher Trainer who has been a dedicated member of IH Milan since 2021. A passionate language enthusiast, he has been actively engaged in English language instruction for over a decade.

He is CELTA-qualified, DELTA-trained, and holds a master’s degree in specialised translation and conference interpreting. In addition to being a CELTA Tutor, Nino juggles roles as a University Lecturer, professional translator, and Director of Studies for UK-based language programmes.
