Rhythm & Blues se jako žánr začal vyvíjet po druhé světové válce a bere si to nejlepší ze swingu, bluesu a boogie. Termín R&B nahradil v roce 1949 do té doby používaný label "Race records" a tím se začal formovat specifický subžánr jazzové kultury.

Rhythm & Blues was formed as a genre after WW2 and it combines the best of Swing, Blues and Boogie. In 1949, the term “Race Records”, which had been used until then, was replaced by “R&B”, and thus a specific subgenre of jazz culture began to take shape.
