The NSSO is thrilled that world-renowned violinist Satu Vänskä will join us as soloist for Beethoven's Violin Concerto. This is the ONLY chance to hear Satu play this work in Sydney ahead of a planned engagement with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra later in the year. Perhaps best known for her work as principal violinist and soloist with the Australian Chamber Orchestra, Satu has also appeared as a soloist with numerous orchestras including the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra and the Arctic Chamber Orchestra, as well as undertaking numerous national and international recitals. The concert closes with Dvořák's Symphony No 7. Completed in 1885, it is considered by many to be Dvořák's finest symphony. It is a deeply Czech work; music inspired by the struggles of the Czech people for national identity. It is full of folk idoms and the dance-like melodies that are so characteristic of Dvořák's music. It opens with a somewhat foreboding tone that develops into a rich melody. The internal movements take us through scenes of hunting and energetic Bohemian dancing. The final movement builds to a huge climax, with the furious final passages of the symphony being perhaps some of the most exciting symphonic music ever written.
