About this Event

#SAT02 Participant Thomas Egoumenides is hosting a set of workshops at old Al Jubail Vegetable Market, Sharjah, tailored for practitioners and students in fields of design, architecture, and art that are interested in rethinking notions of design through principles of circularity and sustainability.

The workshops will focus on the dismantling of Thomas' modular installation, , originally created for the second edition of the Sharjah Architecture Triennial (#SAT02) curated by Tosin Oshinowo. During the workshop, Thomas will guide participants to reimagine and repurpose its materials into furniture or sculptures. Participants will explore assembly systems using materials that are sourced from waste, such as used spools of thread and threaded rods, to design and build objects for them to take home.

This workshop is part of the Triennial’s strategy to invite participants to consider an afterlife for their installations and materials. Through an open-source approach, it focuses on impermanence, inventiveness, and sustainability and challenges conventional notions of waste by demonstrating how innovative design can emerge from materials typically discarded.

Thomas’ installation, ‘The Ship Of Theseus,’ is linked to concepts of modularity and upcycling, particularly how objects can retain their identity despite changes to their constituent parts and how materials can be repurposed while maintaining a connection to their original form.
