GRADE: moderate hike, 21km (13 miles), 354m ascent, approx 6 hours hiking.
ROUTE:
This is a linear hike, starting at Hanborough and ending in Charlbury.
This beautiful walk on the edge of the Cotswolds AONB takes us into the heart of the Oxfordshire countryside. Some people claim that this area was Tolkien’s inspiration for the Hobbits!
We will hike along the Evenlode Valley over rolling hills and fertile countryside through Bleinheim Palace, passing the lake and the Victory Column dedicated to the Duke of Malborough. The trail takes us along Akeman Street, the Old Roman road from Alchester to Cirencester still with some stone slabs intact.
We can have lunch by the river at Stonesfield Ford, before crossing the valley to arrive at the delightful stone village of Finstock we then enter Lord Rotherwick’s deer park, and Cornbury Park to finish in the historic and charming Oxfordshire village of Charlbury where you are free to return home or join us for a beer and some food in a warm 17th century pub!
MEETING POINT: 08:20 London Paddington station, by the information booth near the main ticket hall near platform 1. Second meeting point will be at Hanborough, if you want to make your own way there.
