About the Guest Artists
Giovanni Pompeo is Artistic and Music Director of the Orchestra di Matera e della Basilicata in Italy, and has conducted orchestral and opera performances in his native Italy, in other European countries and around the world. He was formerly a horn player at the La Scala opera house in Milan under the baton of many renowned conductors, including Muti, Gergiev, Luisi, Temirkanov, Levine, Chung and Sinopoli. As a conductor himself, he served as the assistant to Maestro Fabio Luisi, and also worked with Aldo Ceccato, a leading exponent of Sergiu Celibidache’s school, and with Nicola Samale. With a conducting career spanning two decades, Pompeo has earned praise for his musicality and leadership on the podium. He is also dedicated to organizing social and cultural educational projects for children. In this context, he promoted the creation of various children’s and youth orchestras inspired by the “Abreu System,” a project supported by the late conductor Claudio Abbado.
Alexander Frey KM, KStJ maintains a triple career as conductor, organist and pianist. He is in great demand as one of the world’s most versatile conductors and enjoys success in the concert hall and opera house, and in the music of Broadway and Hollywood. He is currently Music Director of Orquesta Cum Jubilo del Camp de Tarragona, Spain, and was music director of the Rome Philharmonic Orchestra, the Bohemia Symphony Orchestra and Stern Chamber Orchestra (Prague), and the Berliner Ensemble, with numerous guest conducting engagements. As pianist and organist, he has performed with over 30 symphony orchestras including the Berlin Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, Orchestra dell’Arena di Verona, Munich Symphony Orchestra, Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, and the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra.
