Saturday, November 16, 2-4PMJoin Mariko Sugimori (Instagram @Mona_and_Zoe) for an introduction to a traditional Japanese textile repair technique known as Sashiko (“little stabs”). We will cover the tools/materials you need, how to do pattern transfers, and a few different hitomezashi (straight and diagonal lined patterns) and moyōzashi (repeating geometric shaped patterns) stitch patterns.
This is an intermediate class, so it is recommended that you have some prior experience in hand stitching.
All the mending supplies you need for the class will be provided. We will be making Sashiko stitch samplers in this class; however, you are also welcome to bring any items of clothing that are in need of mending. Woven fabrics such as linen or cotton are ideal for those new to this mending technique.
About Mariko:
I’ve recently been exploring various methods of visible repair with kintsugi and textile mending, in addition to the repairs for friends/neighbors. I have really enjoyed empowering people to extend the life of their things and reduce waste, and am interested in trying to find ways to make mending a larger part of my life and our community.
Open to ages 15+, all supplies included.
