Join us for a special 8th session of the Syracuse Actors Studio at American High! As you know, American High is a movie production company here in Syracuse founded by Jeremy Garelick and Will Phelps here in 2017 to create the next generation of John Hughes-style coming of age comedies, as well as being home to Syracuse Studios, a production studio that together has produced over 20 films, featuring the talents such as Vince Vaughn, Natalie Morales, and Charlie Day! Recently, SAS has partnered with them to expose actors to a real film studio and create creative synergies.Again- this session will NOT be held at our usual location, Safe Space downtown, but at American High: 800 4th Street, Liverpool, NY.
Our special program will consist first of an extensive guided tour of the production studio, led by Andie Schlenker, Head of Fundraising & Development for AH, and Matt Sacca, Head of Development and Associate Producer at AH.
Next, we will have 3 monologues performed by local prestigious actors: Binaifer Dabu, Jay Merante, & Carolyn Chave.
Followed by a presentation by MJ Mattiaccio, Laura Stisser, and Joe Cunningham on “Set Etiquette.” Being that we are in a film studio, we wanted to share tips and tricks with Do’s and Don’t’s of working on a film set, with feedback as well from studio participants.
Lastly, for our exercise, we will split off into small teams - you may totally work with friends you bring with you or meet and work with participants you meet here at SAS - to create short videos. One of the ingenious things American High did during the production lull was to create American High Shorts, a series of comedic short web videos that has since grown to over 1 million followers and 1 billion views! Their process is much like a Gen Z SNL from idea conception to production so we wanted to create a taste of that. We will choose a John Hughes-style theme (that you can use or choose your own) and then break off into small teams to shoot and publish short comedic videos and then hopefully watch them together. We encourage participants to make the videos as simple as possible and public online so we can complete the task quickly and all view it. Come with ideas!
We’re so excited about this session and partnership with American High! We will also leave a donation hat out - no donation required, as we usually do, but this time to support American High’s AH Academy, a non-profit that teaches film and writing, another one of their great initiatives to create a vibrant creative community.
As an added fun note, we encourage everyone to wear their Halloween costume or a costume since we are so close to that fun holiday and we are all actors who live to play as someone else.

Syracuse Actors Studio is always a free monthly meetup for actors where we learn from and practice acting with each other. Actors of all experience levels are encouraged to attend! Filmmakers, writers, playwrights, and observers are welcome as well, especially to this special session.
