A captivating light and sound experience, exploring centuries of art and changes in society. The popular light and sound spectacular from Luxmuralis returns this November with an amazing series of installations inside and outside the Cathedral, exploring art across the centuries – from the drama of Baroque, which emerged amid the Protestant-Catholic conflicts of the 16th century, to Art Deco, which grew of early 20th century industrialisation and experimentation.
Through glorious projections of art and photography accompanied by sound and music, Sarum Lights: Illuminating Art explores the changes in society that produced these artistic responses.
Displays in the Cloisters, Trinity Chapel and North Nave Aisle will reflect four centuries of ‘new’ ideas from the concept of moral philosophy, natural science and the first English Dictionary, to the American War of Independence, abolition of slavery and women’s emancipation. Brunel and the age of steam will rub shoulders with Zoetrope (an early animation device) and early photography.
In the North Transept there will be a special interactive display: Starry, Starry Night, an installation devoted to Impressionism and Post Impressionism, will invite visitors to share their thoughts on star shaped cards, a reference to Vincent Van Gogh’s The Starry Night.
The spectacular show finale in the Nave of the Cathedral will showcase the Pre-Raphaelite artists (Burne-Jones, Millais, Rossetti and Holman Hunt) and the Impressionists (Monet, Van Gogh, Cezanne, Manet and Renoir) – all titans of their generation seen in a new light.
