Sarah Jane Morris is a singer with an astonishing vocal range. Her thirty-year career, during which she has garnered a loyal and loving international audience, has been wide-ranging and her rich contralto voice goes from strength to strength. She has performed with many groups over the years, from rock to soul to African blues, with classical orchestras, with acoustic guitars and jazz big bands.
The Sisterhood, co-written with Sarah Jane's main collaborator Tony Remy, celebrates the lives and achievements of twelve female singer-songwriters, the women-the shape-changers-who altered the course of musical history. A representation of Sarah Jane's roots, inspirations, and indefatigable love of contemporary music-making and its iconic pioneers 'The Sisterhood' celebrates twelve female stars who dominated the singing and songwriting of the 20th century - Bessie Smith, Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Miriam Makeba, Aretha Franklin, Janis Joplin, Joni Mitchell, Patti Smith, Rickie Lee Jones, Annie Lennox, Kate Bush and Sinead O'Connor.
The Sisterhood Acoustic is Sarah Jane Morris, Tony Remy, Marcus Bonfanti and Henry Thomas.
If you're thinking, I know that name and recognise that voice, then you may remember that in 1986, The Communards and their song ‘Don’t Leave Me This Way’? Yes, that is Sarah Jane Morris, who has also performed with bands including The Test Department, The Redskins, The Annie Whitehead band and The Republic. For some years, she fronted the celebrated 21-piece Brechtian big band The Happy End.
"To honour the legacies of these stars, whilst creating new work demands a breadth of experience of different popular musical forms as well as great versatility in performance styles. Clearly Morris and Remy have the necessary skills." London Jazz News
