Sarah has recently arrived in the South West and has been impressing audiences at several recent gigs, and our monthly jazz jam session.
“Sarah Harris is a professional singer currently living in South Devon. She carved out a successful, full-time, performing career in Brighton over the last 14 years, singing at private events, recording sessions and being a regular on the Brighton Jazz scene. Sarah has worked with nationally-recognised groups such as Urban Voices Collective and The Dap Kings (backing band for Amy Winehouse and Sharon Jones). She has received vocal training with renowned vocalists, Kim Chandler, Dane Chalfin and Mobo award-winning Artist Claire Martin. Taking influence from Jeff Buckley, Etta James, Chet Baker, Carmen McRae and Aretha Franklin, she brings a fresh and soulful approach to jazz.”
Pianist Will Butterworth grew up in Devon playing classical music on the cello and improvising on the piano. In 2002 he started playing jazz piano professionally in Edinburgh. He has worked with many of the UK’s finest musicians, including Martin Speake, Bill Bruford, Dylan Howe, Asaf Sirkis and Jeff Williams. He has played on many albums as a side man and released 5 albums as leader, which have achieved great critical acclaim. Notable collaborations include The Stravinsky Duo with Dylan Howe on drums, reinterpreting the works of Stravinsky, and more recently ‘Aurelius’, a conversational piano trio led by bassist/composer Marcus Penrose. He has also recently made a duo album with British jazz saxophonist Martin Speake called ‘Love and Freedom’, recorded in January 2024. His music has regularly been played on Jazz FM, BBC Radio 3 and Classic FM.
Drummer Ronnie Jones has been part of the Devon jazz scene since moving here from London in 2005. With a background in orchestral, and latin/funk percussion, Ronnie has established a reputation as a highly original, inventive drummer.
As well as this band, Ronnie leads his own trio/quartet and plays in pianist John Horler’s ‘Celebrating Bill Evans’ Trio; alongside bassists Alec Dankworth/Tim Wells. Recent highlights with this trio have included three sold out shows at Ronnie Scott’s, and a live appearance on BBC Radio 3’s ‘In Tune’. The trio has received two five-star JazzMann reviews, and is appearing at Pizza Express, Dean Street, London, next June.
Alongside his music work, Ronnie is an audio/podcast journalist, with a background in radio news (BBC/LBC/IRN).
