The story of the of the railroad coming to Shafter can be duplicated in hundreds of small towns across the country as the presence of the railroad led to the town’s growth and development. Local Historian and Guest Speaker Stan Wilson will review the early history of the railroads in the San Joaquin Valley and share photos from the Shafter Historical Society archives. Wilson’s presentation will show how one railroad interfaced with a Kern County community and how the impact of that involvement led to the community’s growth and eventual preservation of Shafter’s depot.ABOUT THE GUEST SPEAKER
Stan Wilson is a founding member of the Shafter Historical Society since 1979, and has served as Curator of the Shafter Depot Museum for 43 years. He has presented numerous lectures on Kern County local history on behalf of the museum. In 2019, the Conference of California Historical Societies awarded him the Waddingham-Doctor Award for Outstanding Dedication to California History. He is third generation Shafter farmer and lifelong rural resident of Shafter.
