Please join us for the opening of re:View, an exhibition of photographic and installation art by Sant Khalsa, from 5-7pm Friday January 9th, 2026 in the Black Rock Art Gallery at the Black Rock Nature Center.
Sant Khalsa’s artworks derive from an impassioned inquiry into the nature of place and its complex environmental and societal issues. Her artworks create a contemplative space where one can sense the subtle and profound connections between themselves, the natural world, and our constructed landscapes. The artworks in this exhibition are inspired by the artist’s relationship with Joshua trees, developed since she first experienced them in 1973, and reflect decades of observation and research. She has witnessed changes to the trees and their ecosystem due to climate change, fires, development, and increased visitation to the National Park, all of which impact these extraordinary beings. Sant’s works represent her ongoing commitment to eco-art and activism and stand as a call to action for us all.
About the Artist
Sant Khalsa’s artworks are internationally exhibited and published, as well as collected by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Getty, National Galleries of Scotland in Edinburgh, Center for Creative Photography in Tucson, Nevada Museum of Art in Reno, and UCR California Museum of Photography, among others. She was honored with the 2023-24 California Arts Council Individual Artist Fellowship (Legacy Award). Her artworks are published in many books including two monographs, Sant Khalsa: Crystal Clear || Western Waters (Minor Matters, 2022) and Sant Khalsa: Prana - Life with Trees (Griffith Moon, 2019). Sant recently curated the Getty supported PST ART: Art & Science Collide exhibition Desert Forest: Life with Joshua Trees at MOAH Lancaster and co-edited the book of the same title. She is a Professor of Art, Emerita at California State University, San Bernardino, and lives in Joshua Tree.
The exhibition will run from January 9 until March 31, 2026, at the Black Rock Art Gallery located at 9800 Black Rock Canyon Rd, Yucca Valley, CA 92284. There will be an opening reception on Friday January 9, 2026 from 5pm to 7pm. The building is open 7 days a week, 8am - 4pm.
