The trio of Satsuki, Sandy and Steve have performed to enthusiastic audiences at the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney International Women’s Jazz Festival. Sohrab Kolahdooz will be joining them for the first time in this premiere performance of an exciting new collaboration.
Sandy writes:
‘I’m excited that Sohrab will join my long-time collaborators Satsuki and Steve for this special concert which will also be a celebration of my 64th birthday! It will be a joy to play with Satsuki, Sohrab and Steve on this special occasion. Their inventiveness, musicality, sensitivity, responsiveness and depth of sound and feeling open doors to magical musical places. One note struck by Satsuki on the koto, sung by Sohrab, plucked by Steve on the bass, can bring a complete sense of peace and calm - or dark mystery - or a ray of sunshine warmer and more radiant than anything imaginable - or a vast array of feelings to enrich and uplift our souls!
I met Sohrab last year when performing with Chris Field’s Afro-Indian Collective. I was immediately captivated by his extraordinary musicianship and transcendental singing. I had the pleasure of meeting koto virtuoso Satsuki Odamura in the early 1990s, not long after she moved to Australia from Japan. Through numerous collaborations with Satsuki, including Waratah, Koto Transformation, GEST8 and RockPoolMirror, I have become enchanted with both the koto and Satsuki’s superb playing of it. Steve Elphick has a beautiful and unique personality on the double bass, making him one of the treasures of Australian improvised music. I’ve been fortunate to play with Steve throughout my career, from the epic adventures of Women and Children First in the 1980s through concerts and international tours with Clarion Fracture Zone, Mara!, Ten Part Invention, Kim Sanders and many other projects.’
Please join us for this magical concert.
