About this Event

Though it molds the quick sands of global politics with durable change, this commodity has had a rocky start. As the building block for concrete, glass, and electronics, sand is the second most consumed good in the world by volume after water. Yet the narrative is much more than the shape shifting supply chain story about the commodification of prosaic matter. Few things rival the otherworldly aura of blue-green icebergs sparkling on the black sand beaches of Jökulsárlon's glacier lagoon in Iceland. Viewed through the prisms of flora and fauna, real estate and global trade, sandy coastlines fabricate a fascinating Beauty and the Beast chronicle that is as memorable as the childhood fairytale.

Join us in-person or online for this discussion with speaker Soma Roy (Founder, The Nourishment Projects). Registration is required and Zoom details will be sent closer to the time of the program. Light lunch and refreshments will be provided in-person.

After a twenty year career as an engineer working at Fortune 100 companies such as Siemens, Chevron, Novartis and Raytheon, Soma Roy left the corporate world to concentrate on her passion, The Nourishment Projects. The discipline of her Masters degree in engineering and Six Sigma accreditation informs the program curriculum. The pedagogy marries Philosophy with Science.

This program is free and open to the public. Doors open to in-person attendees at 11:30AM. Please note that the main entrance is currently for residents only; please use the door on South Dorchester Ave to enter.

International House will be providing virtual, in-person, and hybrid programming for Autumn Quarter. Convenings are open to all invitees who are compliant with UChicago vaccination requirements and, because of ongoing health risks, particularly to the unvaccinated, participants are expected to adopt the risk mitigation measures (masking and social distancing, etc.) appropriate to their vaccination status as advised by public health officials or to their individual vulnerabilities as advised by a medical professional. Public convening may not be safe for all and carries a risk for contracting COVID-19, particularly for those unvaccinated. Participants will not know the vaccination status of others and should follow appropriate risk mitigation measures. We are complying with all University guidelines on the website and at this time, masks are required to be worn by unvaccinated and vaccinated attendees inside International House.
