Learn to cast in one-off molds made from a fine-grained sand. We will talk about how to make a good impression, venting and sprues, and ways you can make small production runs using sand casting. There will be some instruction on finishing your sand casting pieces, but the majority of the class will be focused on casting and troubleshooting.
All tools are provided for use in class. NO METAL IS INCLUDED! You are welcome to bring your clean (no solder) sterling or fine silver scrap for use. Some casting grain will be available for purchase - pricing depends on market rate.
Bronze will also be available for purchase, but requires more comfort with the torch to reach casting temperatures.
Students are encouraged to bring small items to cast - they should be no larger than a quarter and without undercuts. They can be natural items, polymer clay modeled items, metal clay masters, etc. We will discuss which ones are good for casting (and why) and which ones have issues (and ways that those could be overcome, if applicable)
Your class includes a crucible that you will keep, and the use of borax, sand, whip, parting powder, torch, etc.
