About this Event
A call to Cancer Survivors or representatives to participate in this year’s San Sebastian Festival in Old San Juan Puerto Rico. The idea is to bring hundreds of cancer survivors dressed as Vejigante and dance on January 16 to 19, 2026, Puerto Rico. The main vehicle will be the Puerto Rican image of Vejigante. Loiza needs you to achieve this goal. Cancer statistics in our communities throughout the United States and Puerto Rico have increased dramatically. Likewise, a large number of young people are being diagnosed with this condition, and we want to alert everyone to the importance of prevention and early detection to achieve a good survival outcome.
The Fiestas de la Calle San Sebastián is the unofficial closing to the longest holiday season in the world. During the multi-day celebrations, Old San Juan is completely taken over by live music, impromptu dancing in every street corner, and even circus performances! Fun fact: The festival is also known locally as the SanSe, a shortened version of the full name.

The main objective of the La Comparsa Rosa Vejigante Project is to educate about early cancer detection and prevention using the largest platform for Puerto Ricans in the U.S. The proposal has several additional components: an informational and educational website is already operational; it will feature a series of workshops, conferences on Vejigantes and the creation of masks from recycled materials; it will broadcast live streaming from the parade via cameras installed in some of the vejigantes; and the participation of survivors as dancers dressed as vejigantes.
In short, we are calling on cancer survivors or their representatives to walk, dance, and enjoy the great event in the most important cultural city of Puerto Rico, San Juan, San Sebastian Festival, January 16 to 19, 2026.
