A celebration of the third and final harvest of the year
Samhain is the third and final harvest.
Samhain is a renowned Pagan festival and arguably the most celebrated. It is the final harvest before the cold of Winter descends. At this point in the season, the life cycle is complete. Death surrounds. It is potent in the crisp air and falling leaves. Samhain is the beginning point of the darkest half of the year, as the earth falls into a deep slumber. Traditionally, Samhain begins not at dawn but at dusk, marking the season of darkness, because the dawn can only be born from the night.
Samhain begins the season of dormancy, introspection, and reflection. It is a time to let go of anything that has already let go of you. It is a time to release what you no longer desire. It is a time to let things die that no longer nourish. There is magic in letting things die because it is only in death that we can find rebirth and new creation. Samhain is not only the end of a life cycle; it is the beginning of a new one.
As we hold space to acknowledge the importance and sacredness of death, we take time to honor our ancestors. We may place pictures or memorabilia of past loved ones on our altars. We might take time to recognize relationships or beliefs we have let go of, even if the process was painful. We honor the death process and its vital place in the cycle of life. Offer those you have grieved hospitality and remember them.
Samhain symbolism: The Sun King is now sacrificed back to the earth with the seed until the Winter Solstice, and the Goddess, now as Crone, mourns him until his rebirth at Yule. At this time, the Sun King travels the underworld learning its wisdom. This is the time of the descent into darkness, of pre-conception, out of which new life and new ideas will eventually emerge.
