Same Robot Different Location is something ChrisRWK (Robots Will K*ll) has been saying for a while now. It’s what makes art, streetart, and graffiti so unique. It’s the idea of a familiar face somewhere new. You see one of your favorite artists’ characters, mural, or burner in a new city, and there’s a feeling of comfort, of knowing they were here too. Their art brings about a feeling of familiarity and belonging. You recognize it, you know it’s their’s, and in that moment there is a connection. You may be standing where they were standing, smelling the same restaurants firing up their grills in the morning, and dealing with the same weather. It’s an escape, it’s a moment, it’s an experience, it runs deeper than looking at some paint on a wall.
Proudly bringing his first solo show in California, ChrisRWK’s Same Robot Different Location will feature his signature robot and characters who have been seen in his work throughout the world via stickers, murals, and wheat pastes over the years. This time they have ventured to a new space, to express their familiar feelings and emotions. The work for the show touches upon that idea of that familiar feeling of taking home with you wherever you go and staying true, near or far, from the east coast to west coast or around the world. Drawing influence from his childhood and the movies, TV shows, comic books, and music that he was exposed to, ChrisRWK’s paintings frequently cite past conceptions of popular culture embedded in his psyche's cache. His style derived from nostalgic pop culture creates a sense of familiarity when seeing ChrisRWK’s work – from the initial form, to the coloring, and personality of his artwork and characters. ChrisRWK’s works frequently reveal everyday musings and people that one might pass by without a second glance.
