As the Landlord of the Wheatsheaf pub I was approached by two of our very well respected locals, Gary and John, to set up a Monday night music club. This was to try and encourage people from all aspects of life to come and join in with their love of music.Over the last few months this group has helped so many people with their mental health, their wellbeing, their confidence and also to encourage them to feel part of the Garstang community.
Since then this group has developed into the house band ‘The Beatsheafs’, performing their first gig at the Church Town charity event.
Very sadly and incredibly devastating to us all we lost not only a work colleague, but a very dear friend Sam Dodd in July of this year. Sam was only 18 years old, so full of life and incredibly fun to be with. As a community we were all utterly devastated beyond words. The house band and I have decided we would organise an event, focused around music and local talents to help raise money for CRY so that what happened to our dear Sam and also another local young man Matthew Hesmondhalgh hopefully doesn’t happen to any more of our local families.
The charity ‘CRY’ (Cardiac, Risk in the Young) is a charity now very dear to all of our hearts. They fund local screening which investigates further using genetic testing for family member which can sometimes highlight the condition that may be responsible for the SADS (Sudden, Arrhythmic Death Syndrome) and (YSCD) Young sudden, cardiac death.
Screening can, and does SAVE LIVES.
So let’s come together as a community, enjoy the music, and raise as much money for CRY for all the amazing work they do and enjoy this special day in The Wheatsheaf Pub with friends and family in a place where Sam was happy.
Further to this I would like to give a massive thank you to Emily and others for all the hard work they have put into the organising of this event, the whole wheatsheaf team for all their ideas, support and enthusiasm to the cause, John Clifton and Gary Cross for their continued support and dedication to the Monday night music club and for the event, also Mark Slater for agreeing to compere. Also all the local businesses and the wider community for all of their support and donations towards the raffle. (A comprehensive list to come soon)
A massive thank you to Paul and Debbie Dodd as well as the whole family for your incredible strength and determination to generate awareness for CRY to make sure what happened to Sam does not happen to any more families, you are all a true inspiration to the Garstang community and have become part of our ever growing Wheatsheaf family.
Also to all the artists that have agreed to perform and provide entertainment on the day free of charge in order to raise as much as we possibly can for CRY. We cannot thank you all enough.
