SAM BINGA ///
DJ and Producer Sam Binga represents (in all senses of the word) the most vital, vibrant strains of dance music culture. At the decks or in the studio, he draws a line from the bump’n’flex of Garage to the intensity of Jungle/D’n’B, from the Afro-Caribbean influences of UK Funky into the percussive energy of Grime and Footwork…while still managing to stamp his personality across every mix and production that bears his name.
In many ways one of the pioneers of the 'halftime' sound, early bangers such as 'AYO' and 'Lef Dem' (alongside regular vocal spar Redders) were responsible for a resurgence of interest and creativity within the uptempo dance music world. Taking elements of Jamaican Dancehall, classic southern US Rap and Junglist bass pressure, Binga was also an integral part of opening up drum & bass to the burgeoning Juke / Footwork sounds bubbling up from Chicago. Alongside artists such as Fracture and Om Unit, Binga formed part of a wave of UK DJs and producers inspired by the rawness of Footwork, and the realisation that the 160bpm tempo allowed it to be mixed with elements of classic Jungle - a cross-genre conversation that is continuing to bear fruit to this day. His debut album 'Wasted Days', from 2015, is still seen as a standout body of work, introducing Grime vocals and production techniques to his sound, while reaching across the globe for vocal collaborations with Baltimore's TT The Artist and Jamaica's Warrior Queen.

But far from finding a niche and sitting with it, Binga has constantly pushed himself - and the scene - to new levels of genre fluidity. 2017's 'Champion EP', alongside much-loved MC Rider Shafique, saw Binga creating 8 tracks of straight up dancehall, including the much-loved body-positivity anthem 'Proud' with Tiffanie Malvo - the Enei remix of which is currently sitting at well over 1.5 million streams on Spotify. 2019's 'If The Cap Fits' contained yet more explorations of mutant 170bpm dancehall, but also saw Binga take a literal trip to Texas, recording none other than Houston icon Paul Wall for the dirty-south inspired 'All Cap'. Amongst all this, Binga has worked with Grime originator Riko Dan on the 'Wicked & Bad EP', collaborated with Toronto's Marcus Visionary on the UK Funky-inspired 'Doubles EP', and created a mini-album of immersive 'found sound' dub, built from field recordings on Ireland's Atlantic Coast and released on Portland's Zam Zam Sounds.

Alongside building his name with big releases on scene-setting labels like Critical and Exit (as part of heavyweight super-group Richie Brains), Binga has shared his deep love of British bass music with audiences across the world, from India to China and Russia to Argentina, and across too many tours of North America to count (but they still keep asking him back). Standout appearances at festivals like Outlook and Bass Coast have cemented his reputation as an unmissable DJ on any line-up, while his b2b sessions with Chimpo have achieved legendary status.

Since early 2020 Binga has been building his label, Pineapple, into an essential port of call for dance music fans of all stripes. With his multi-genre, tempo-fluid productions underpinned by a focus on fresh vocal energy and tough percussive workouts, the label’s been winning big-name support from the likes of Skream, Ben UFO, David Rodigan and Serum. Pineapple perfectly reflects the passion and energy he puts into building, supporting and celebrating the sounds that have shaped him - and which continue to shape dance music culture, shaking bassbins and moving dancefloors from Bristol to the world.
