About this Event

Welcome to Salmon Watch!

Salmon Watch is primarily a field trip program focused on salmon and freshwater ecosystems. Field trips are provided at no cost to local classes thanks to funding from the Jackson Soil and Water Conservation District (JSWCD), and continued support from local communities, partners, and agencies.

The Salmon Watch curriculum is best suited for upper elementary and middle school students (ages 9-14). If you have younger students (Grade 3 and under)contact us separately to discuss possible activities and do not use the EventBrite system.

Field trips run approximately 4 hours (including a lunch break) starting no earlier than 9:00 ending no later than 2:00 (some flexibility available as needed). If you cannot be at the site contact us to see how we can accommodate. Please see below for a sample schedule.

Students rotate through four stations: Salmon Biology, Riparian Ecology, Water Quality, and Macroinvertebrates with a break for lunch. Students are generally split into four groups of approximately 15 each.

Salmon Watch instructors are usually a combination of contracted environmental educators and volunteers from partner organizations who are natural resource professionals. Each field trip has a "lead instructor" who will be the primary contact with the teacher on day of the field trip for logistics and details. Day-of questions, schedule adjustments, and other concerns should be directed to them. Coordination prior to the day of the event should be funneled to Tiffani Vincent at [email protected].

One adult chaperone per 15 students is required. You do not need to reserve a spot on the field trip for a chaperone, only students.

Field trips take place rain or shine and lead instructors will contact teachers if conditions require cancellation.
