ABOUT
Join us for the 4th Annual Salish Sea Regatta. A unique multi-stage sailing race delivering three days of competitive sailing covering 85 nm of the Salish Sea, combined with fun social dock activities with your fellow racers.
Royal Vancouver Yacht Club invites you to be our guest, racing in some of the best venues the Salish Sea has to offer and experience the hospitality of two of our prized outstations. Members and non-members welcome.
Enjoy some of the finest late-summer/early-fall sailing in B.C.’s south coast, combined with comradery and fun. (Rumor has it the always-entertaining, informal, laser match-racing in Silva Bay may take place once again). Expect a competitive fleet, challenging adventures, and a good time. Capacity is limited to 40 boats, so get on the guest list early.

SKIPPERS COMMENTS
September 6-8th (Friday-Sunday), 2024 is the 4th annual RVYC Salish Sea Race. Think of this as a 3 day adventure race, similar to 3 legs of the VanIsle360. Highly recommended to anyone interested in offshore sailing, like Southern Straits, Swiftsure, VanIsle360, Vic-Maui or TransPac. This event is capped at 40 boats and is mandatory for Strum’s 8 person Core-Crew.
CREW CALL
If any of the 8 Core-Crew can not attend, replacements will be selected from those who select GOING to this event, with preference given to those with a valid Safety At Sea certificate, and availability to help prep Strum for this event after 3 months at sea. We pass the hat for the 3 day food costs, (typically $50-100) which include breakfast, lunch & dinner while racing.
CORE-CREW
This is a mandatory Core-Crew event, as we have 8 Core-Crew and only 8 berths on board. There are 2 Core-Crew spots available, apply within!

2023 documents provided for reference.
Thanks to all who participated in the 2022 regatta (Strum “your welcome”) -- we are looking forward to hosting boats for the 2023 edition. There will be some changes, in response to suggestions and comments from competitors, but the basic flavour of the event will remain. The regatta is intended for fully equipped and self-sustaining ORC and PHRF sailboats.
Last year we used YB Races tracking system. You can see the 2022 race at yb.tl/Salishsr2022 or use the YB Races app on your mobile device.

“Strum was the fastest”
Q&A
BOOZE Q: Should I bring some?
A: YES, each crew is requested to donate a bottle of rum to Strum.
Why? Rum is a sailors drink, lighter than beer and Strum is too small of a boat for everyone to have their own private bottle. Plus this is a social sport, so we should be encouraged to pour rounds without worrying about whose bottle it is. There are no liquor stores available where we are going, so we have to pack ALL provisions in. Bottle only please, as mix and ice are provided. Exceptions are made for those who do not drink.
COFFEE CUP/WATER BOTTLE
Q: Can I bring my own coffee cup and water bottle?
A: Please no. In the interest of reducing weight, waist & clutter, Strum provides 8 MEC coffee cups (one with your name) and 6 no-contact squirt plastic sport water bottles. We keep 3 bottles on deck & 3 in fridge/freezer. White (electrical) tape on bottle means it has Electrolytes in it. Please note, if you bring a cup/bottle, this needs to be stored in your bag when not in use.
Q: What is the Cushion Dance?
A: When we finish a race, we move all sails under the boom and put all cushions back in place. When you wake up, pack your sleeping bag ASAP and move all cushions to the outside quarter berth (inside quarter berths are for crew gear bags while sailing). Port cushions to port quarter berth. Starboard cushions to starboard quarter berth.
Q: Do I bring food?
A: No, just money. We pass the hat for all communal breakfast, lunch & dinner while racing. Expect $50-100 for these 3 days at sea (2022 Salish Sea was $75), plus some food truck options at Garden Bay. Have breakfast Friday morning before you arrive. There is an optional crew dinner Sunday night at RVYC if we arrive late.
Q: What is expected of me?
A: The Three Cs:
Contribute/Compatibility/Consensus.
Strum normally has 12 regatta crew, but for Salish Sea, we are restricted to 8 as that is the maximum sleeping berths on board. Plus these distance races do not have the same intense regatta sailing maneuvers. The 3 Cs are,
1. CONTRIBUTE
to trim, sail changes, tactics, weather, cooking, cleaning, socializing and food costs.
1. COMPATIBILITY
IMO is the single best trait for any offshore sailor. Not to be confused with agreeable: we like debate and contrarians, just not with the petty & annoying traits.
2. CONSENSUS
Definition is the “agreement in the judgment or opinion reached by a group as a whole”, which means we can talk about tactics and sail changes all day long, but when a Consensus is made, we don’t revisit that conversation. Mistakes will be made, but it is more important that we stay focused with the decisions made.
GEAR BAG Q: Can I bring my goalie bag?
A: Hell no! Please bring whatever fits inside a 50L or smaller waterproof gear bag, not including your wet weather gear/PFD/Tether, which can be hang up before departure. One double hanger will be provided, with your # on it for your wet weather gear. A single hanger with your # for your PFD/shore jacket.
While racing, gear bags are stored on the inside quarter berths: last names starting A-M, your gear bag stores in port quarter berth. N-Z gear bags in starboard quarter berth.
While sleeping, your gear bag is in your berth (also why you don’t want the goalie bag).
MONEY Q: Do I need cash?
A: it’s a good idea, but not necessary if you can transfer funds. Skipper paid the $525 registration fee and all boat, gear and maintenance costs. The crew will share the cost of communal meals which include breakfast, lunch and dinners while racing. Expect this to be $50-100 (2022 Salish Sea was $75), plus your bottle of rum for 3 days at sea, which should be cheaper than what you would spend if not racing. Don’t expect any provisioning during this remote race.
SAFETY GEAR Q: Do I need my own wet weather gear, PFD & Tether?
A: You can, but don’t have too: With 48 hours notice, you can request a set of Strum Gill Offshore Wet Weather Gear (S/M/L/XL), manual PFD with whistle & strobe, and/or a Safety Tether with 1m & 2m clips. If you do provide your own gear, please make sure you are compliant with the regatta regulations (gear requirements, spare CO2 cartridge, etc.)
SLEEPING Q: Where do I sleep?
A: Strum can sleep 8 (2 in bow, 2 on sofas, 2 in each quarter berths). You will be assigned a berth for the entire regatta.
SLEEPING BAG Q: Should I bring my sleeping bag?
A: No. Strum has 8 sleeping bags on board. Please roll yours up in the morning, pack in bag and put in closest hanging locker.
SMOKING Q: Can I smoke?
A: Hard No. Strum is strictly a non smoking boat, as are both RVYC Outstations (with strict penalties to your host). Chew & vape is an alternative. Anyone caught smoking at the outstations will be left behind to find their own way home.
TOILETRY Q: Do I need my own shower kit?
A: No, just a tooth brush & micro towel. In the interest of reducing weight, Strum has Neutrogena face soap/SPF15 moisturizer, sunscreen, toothpaste & anti perspirant at all 3 sinks. Shampoo, Conditioner & Body Wash in both working showers. Shower kits are available to take to the free outstations shower/bathrooms (no coins needed).
