About this Event
When we think of witches, we imagine flying brooms and pointed hats. The reality, as seen in the Salem Witch Trials, is much different. The deadliest witch hunt in American history connects to much larger history from Europe and defies many stereotypes that we’ve come to associate with it. The American witch hunt also represents a huge legal failure and eventual change as a reaction to the executions of innocent people. In this lecture, we’ll deconstruct the pop culture image of the witch, examine the history both in Europe and the United States, and then do a deep dive into what exactly happened in colonial Massachusetts. At the end of the lecture, we’ll review awesome library resources and recommended reading for people eager to learn more.
