“Salad Days: A Decade of Punk in Washington, DC (1980-90)” is a documentary film that examines the early DIY punk scene in the US capital. It was a decade when seminal bands like Bad Brains, Minor Threat, Government Issue, Scream, Void, Faith, Rites of Spring, Marginal Man, Fugazi, and others released their own records and booked their own shows – without major record label constraints or mainstream media scrutiny. Contextually, it was a cultural watershed that predated the alternative music explosion of the 1990s (and the industry’s subsequent implosion). More than fourty years after its inception, DC’s original DIY punk spirit serves as a reminder of the hopefulness of youth, the power of community and the strength of conviction. That very same spirit is still alive today as any witness of the reigning local Rhineline scene surely knows. These ‘kids’ spun their web throughout Europe and even into the US. All the way from Spain with its Can't Keep Us Down Festival that raises the flag of the Barcelona hardcore scene at the beginning of every year via Paris and Belgium to the glory of Quality Control HQ in the UK, to Berlin stalwarts like SFR and Refuse Records with its ties deep into Poland to Czechia to Switzerland and beyond do the tight knit threads of this weave reach.
Come to Lichtspiele Kalk in Köln, Germany on Saturday Nov. 30th for a trip back to the roots of this thing of ours. Witness some of the originators of this life long love tell the story of how they got the ball rolling and revel in the parallels between then and now.
To my current knowledge there is no other European mainland screening scheduled so if you want to see the story of DCHC unfold on the big screen with a bunch of fellow fanatics, this is it!
Doors open at 5 pm with a little record fair.
I was able to get Crucial Response Records aboard, bringing the hottest reissues of the DC Scene, managed to rope in a few old heads thinning out their collections & Deluxe seller Slow Boy to satisfy all your 2nd Hand needs and bring it back full circle with local cream of the crop DBNO, Collective Memory, Side 2 Side and Bop Pills providing the heat of their latest releases.
Screening starts at 6pm with collector and Dischord lover extraordinaire Nico Revealed giving a short introduction.
