First performed in 1858, the Oratorio de Noël by Camille Saint-Saëns is a hidden gem of the early-romantic/late-classical style. Featuring voices, orchestra, organ and harp (our most ambitious forces yet!), this cantata-like work comprises of 10 solo, ensemble, and choral movements whose music traverses styles ranging from Baroque counterpoint to Wagnerian romanticism, yet remains perpetually tender and pastoral throughout. Textually, it briefly guides us through the second chapter of Luke and reflects on the significance of Jesus’s birth and the Christmas story. This Christmas, we would love for you to join us as we bring this work to life in English, before inviting everyone to join in for a range of traditional carols in celebration of the Christmas season and what it all means!
