About this event
safeYARN is a 3-4 hour training of (safeTALKs) suicide alertness program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. This training helps participants recognise a person with thoughts of suicide and connect them with resources who can help them in their communities.
Participants don’t require any formal preparation to attend the training – anyone who wants to make a difference can learn these lifesaving skills. safeYARN is delivered by an Indigenous Trainer and a Community Support Person.
Workshop Features:
Presentation that provides cultural guidance for identifying a person with thoughts of suicide
Identifying culturally appropriate support from local community services
Audio visual learning aids
Apply yarning to the TALK (Tell, Ask, Listen, Keepsafe) steps
Who should attend?
This training is suitable for:
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members and Elders
Educators
Frontline Service Workers
Allies who work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and want to enhance their cultural capability
Why Should I attend?
Suicide rates for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are 2-3 times higher than non-Indigenous Australian, with young people particularly at risk.
You will learn how to recognise warning signs and reach in to someone who may be having thoughts of suicide and help connect them to support in their communities.
