Midlands. A day of reflection, sharing, guidance and insight into positive ways forward from the national safeguarding practice review
About this Event

The Child Safeguarding Practice Review Panel's report on the abuse and neglect of children in residential settings run by the Hesley Group in Doncaster is both heart-breaking and frustrating. https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/safeguarding-children-with-disabilities-in-residential-settings

It serves as a solemn reminder that this type of abuse is not a thing of the past, it is occurring right now, and everyone who works with and for children must take action to prevent it from happening again.

It is also a great motivator to improve our practice, to ensure that the children we look after truly are happy, safe and loved.

Join us for this dynamic, engaging session which will give you time to understand, reflect and plan for action following the concerns highlighted by the practice review. There will also be plenty of time for networking with others in the sector from across your region.

We will deep dive into the Priority 1, promoting the voices and rights of children and young people with learning disabilities: understand how to embed positive communication, treating behaviour as communication and including the voices of close adults who can speak for the child. We will examine how to lead a safe, positive, loving, open culture; and we will round off with the “superpower” that is Emotional Intelligence which will positively impact team dynamics, and the quality of a child’s experience in your residential setting.

Lead Panel Member for the review, Dr Susan Tranter, said: Children with disabilities and complex health needs are some of the most vulnerable in our society but they are too often overlooked and forgotten. Join us to make a positive difference to the safety and ability to thrive of these extraordinary, wonderful children and young people, whom we are here to serve.

Regional training day, led by Eithne Staunton, CHQ Consultant and Trainer; inspirational leader of Outstanding residential service for disabled children, for 13 years. And Margaret Davies, CHQ Training Lead.
