About this Event

Why Safeguarding Is Important

Everyone, regardless of age or circumstance, should participate in sport in a safe environment. The safeguarding of children in sport is of paramount importance. Children and young people’s experiences of sport should be fun, enjoyable and conducted in the spirit of fair play.

By following the principles, policy and practical guidelines contained in the Code & Ethics and Good Practice for Children in Sport and Sport Ireland’s , sports leaders are playing their part in providing an enjoyable and safe environment in which children can learn and thrive.

Safeguarding 1 - Child Welfare and Protection Basic Awareness training

Any person working with or who has interaction with or who is involved in the planning/administration of activities or events with young people (according to the requirements of NGB – including all Coaches, Club Children’s Officers (CCO) and Designated Liaison Persons (DLP) – should complete the 3-hour Child Welfare & Protection Basic Awareness workshop. This workshop educates participants on the implementation of best practice in safeguarding the welfare of children involved in sport.

On completion of the Safeguarding 1 course, participants will be able to:

  • Implement best practice in protecting the welfare of participants
  • Create a child-centred environment within the sports club
  • List categories of abuse and some indicators associated with abuse
  • Make appropriate response to a disclosure
  • Make a report to Designated Liaison Person or appropriate Statutory Authorities

Only ONE place can be booked in each order. If you are booking more than one place on this course, you must place separate orders for each. Apologies for any inconvenience this may cause. If you are booking on behalf of someone else, you must enter the participant's name (this is required for the Safeguarding Certificate), participant's email address (this is the email address that will be used to issue the certificate after the course), and participant's mobile number (this will be used to send text reminders, etc.)

Participants on this training course must be over 18 years of age.

Anyone aged under 18 who wants to attend a Safeguarding 1 course must first complete this form (WSP SG1 Parental Consent Form.doc) and submit it to Peter Jones on [email protected] prior to booking a place on this course.

Cost

The cost is EUR20 per person (plus EUR2.14 Eventbrite admin & booking fees).

Safeguarding Certificate

Please note that Safeguarding certificates are now issued digitally/online ONLY, via the Sport80 portal. WSP no longer issues paper certificates. We will send information on how to access the digital cert to the participant's email address.

Safeguarding 1 certificates are valid for 3 years.

Renewal

If you have attended a Safeguarding 1 – Child Welfare & Protection Basic Awareness course within the last three years, you do not need to complete another full course. Instead, you can do a “refresher” course online. Click to access Sport Ireland’s Safeguarding 1 online Refresher course.

On completion of the Refresher course, you should complete the Digital Test. You must score 80% or more to pass. When you pass the test, you will receive a Digital Certificate. Your certificate will then be valid for a further 3 years. At that point, you will be required to attend another full Safeguarding 1 – Child Welfare & Protection Basic Awareness training course/workshop.
