Statement of Need: Musculoskeletal injuries plague rehabilitation professionals due to frequent manual patient handling, hindering both staff well-being and patient care. This Safe Patient Handling and Mobility (SPHM) conference addresses this critical need by empowering nursing professionals with evidence-based knowledge, practical skills, and collaborative networking opportunities. Through lectures, workshops, and demonstrations, we'll tackle the unique challenges of diverse patient populations and limited resources, fostering a culture of safety and optimizing patient recovery trajectories. Addressing the Need for a SPHM Conference:

  • Knowledge dissemination: This conference will bridge the gap between research and practice by providing nursing professionals with up-to-date evidence-based knowledge on SPHM principles and best practices.
  • Hands-on training: Practical workshops and demonstrations will equip participants with skills and techniques for safe patient handling in various nursing patient care mobility tasks.
  • Collaboration and innovation: The conference will foster collaboration and knowledge exchange among different disciplines involved in nursing, leading to innovative solutions for addressing patient handling challenges.
  • Promoting a culture of safety: By highlighting the importance of SPHM and its benefits for both patients and staff, the conference will contribute to creating a culture of safety.

Program Learning Objectives: All Northwell Health continuing medical education activities are designed to improve patient care, safety, and outcomes. At the conclusion of this conference, participants should be able to:

  • Participants will be able to explain the benefits of integrating SPHM into their practice for themselves and their patients.
  • Participants will be able to identify common barriers to effective SPHM implementation and develop strategies to overcome them.
  • Participants will be able to describe proper body mechanics and safe lifting techniques utilizing appropriate SPHM technology within the context of breakout sessions focused on specific areas like repositioning, patient functional assessment.
