Come be a part of creating Heart & Scroll, the 2024 community art project for the Salem Arts Festival! This project invites our Salem neighbors to deconstruct the boxes arriving to our homes (rarely containing what we truly cherish) and reflect on the values we can build on together.We will be holding weekly workshops at ChagallPAC on Artists' Row from 10 am to noon every Saturday until the festival (June 7 through June 9).
Participants begin by deconstructing cardboard boxes to create upcycled "scrolls" and draw/write reflections on the question: "What values do you want to live by?" Participants will then roll up their scrolls and select strips of upcycled fabric to weave, wrap, knot and braid the bundle together. Individual bundles will join others and together hold and represent collective values we all share.
Heart & Scroll is led by Salem High student Jessica Valatka with mentor public artists Linda Mullen & Claudia Paraschiv. The completed project will be display at the Salem Arts Festival June 7-9!
Heart & Scroll is supported by Goldberg Properties, the Salem Rainbow Stroll, and other sponsors from the local business community, as well as a grant from the Salem Cultural Council.
