Day of the Dead/ Dia de Muertos is a traditional holiday of the indigenous people from Mexico and Central America. Altars are created to welcome back and honor the memory of those who have passed. The altar can have multiple tiers and includes ofrendas or offering to create a sacred space. The ofrenda can include mementos or photographs of the departed and symbols of the holiday, calaveras (decorated skulls, papel picado (cut paper banners) and marigolds. The belief is that the marigold’s scent will guide the spirits back to the living. The four elements are also incorporated, water (pitcher), wind (papel picado), earth (food), and fire (candles).
Each artist is invited to create their own 2 x 3 altar. The subject matter of who or what will be honored is up to the individual. There is no requirement to use the traditional practices of the Day of the Dead. The only requirement is to create a space that is (dimensions TBA) that includes handmade, personal work. The altar can be displayed on the wall, a podium, a windowsill, or the floor. Integrating other cultures is encouraged.
