“workshops, tourney, moustache challenge”
SabreSlash 2024 is an annual event established with the aim of promoting the art of sabre fencing in its various historical forms. It is open to all historical sabre fencing stylists of all levels and will take place in Prague, Czech Republic, September 28 - 29 2024.
The organizers, Barbasetti Military Sabre (since 1895) and Ars Dimicatoria Prague, are proud to announce that this year we will host a distinguished guest from overseas, Maestro de Armas Ramón Martínez from the Martinez Academy of Arms, New York, USA, who will lead a workshop “The Molinelli in the Northern Italian School of Sabre Fencing“.
In this workshop Maestro Martínez will focus on the technical execution of the molinelli: the articulation of the action executed from the elbow and cover both the offensive and defensive applications of this technique.
Maestro de Armas Ramón Martínez is an inheritor of a “Living Tradition” generations old, teaching classical and historical fencing in New York City. He studied with the late Maître d'Armes Frederick Rohdes: becoming his protégé and earning the rank of Master. Maître Rohdes trained with Maestro Luigi Barbasetti specifically in sabre during his extended stay while working in Paris. This system of sabre fencing has been preserved and taught at the Martinez Academy of Arms for the last 40 years. Maestro Martínez’s responsibility has always been to preserve, teach and promote the tradition of Northern Italian Classical Fencing.
The organizers are also very proud that this year we will host our distinguished guest from Spain, Maestro Alberto Bomprezzi from La Escuela de Esgrima Histórica de Madrid, who will lead a workshop “The Spanish military saber of Jaime Merelo and Casademunt”.
The workshop will focus on two main aspects:
1) Theoretical - explaining the theory, its relationship with the original Destreza method and how it differs from other methods.
2) Practical – presenting techniques commonly used but also some very specific to this method.
Maestro Alberto Bomprezzi is the founder of La Escuela de Esgrima Histórica de Madrid (AEEA) and the technical director of the Madrid Historical Fencing School.
Maestro Bomprezzi first studied Shotokan karate under Sensei Osamu Nomura in Madrid. Than swichted to sports fencing and was coached by Ileana Duarte – Sala de Armas de Madrid actualmente en la sala de Armas Adalid en Cádiz, Raúl Maroto – Sala de Armas de Madrid actualmente en el Club Europeo de las Rozas and Alvaro Calderón – Centro Cultural de los Ejércitos. From 1994 until 2001 he competed in sports fencing at the national level. In 2002 he established the first school of historical fencing in Spain and since then has been teaching fencing profesionally as a martial art.
As every year we will also have a test cutting/thrusting workshop for you. We will use light sabres for “test thrusting” and heavier sabres for “test cutting”.

- “Feints in Barbasetti fencing system”, workshop led by Leonid Křížek, Barbasetti Military Sabre (since 1895), Prague, Czech Republic.
- “Controlled Direct cuts and thrust in Barbasetti fencing system”, workshop led by Michael Kňažko, Barbasetti Military Sabre (since 1895), Prague, Czech Republic.
- “SabreSlashing with light and heavy sabres”, test-cutting workshop.
- “SabreSlash Moustache Challenge”. All gentlemen are encouraged to attend the event wearing a fully grown 1900´s style moustache. The wearer of the most classical moustache will be awarded a very special prize.
- „Zabłocki Sabre 2024“. The biggest Barbasetti sabre fencing tournament since the legendary 1895 Prague military fencing tournament organized by k.u.k lieutenant Dominik Riegel. The winner of the tournament will receive a brand new Swordsmithy practice sabre.

20:00 – 23:00 „ Sabres & Beer are inseparable“, good food and beer as well as chat about sabres in the pub “U Topolů”.

Workshops and tournament requirements:
-complete protective sabre fencing gear (mask, jacket, a pair of gloves, throat and groin protectors – all compulsory), own sabre for workshops
-sabres for „ Zabłocki Sabre 2024 “ tournament are provided by the organizers
