On Saturday, Oct. 11 at noon at the Babe Ruth Museum, Mike Walsh will give a presentation about the new family of stats named tBG that he and his neighbor Tom Lewis developed over the last couple of years.
These new stats incorporate principles of OBP, SLG%, RBI, and other traditional stats to create comprehensive batting, pitching, and base running stats named tBG (total Bases Generated), tBS (total Bases Surrendered), and tBGR (total Bases Generated by Runner) respectively.
tBG stats are based on the counting of “all bases” generated on “each and every play.” For each play, the bases gained or lost are attributed to the responsible player. In most cases, this is the batter, but sometimes it’s the base runner. tBG is intended as a replacement with OPS and, according to Mike and Tom, it avoids the flaws in OPS.
Mike and Tom recently developed an xtra bases running stat as well, and they add that value to their original base running stat, tBGR, for what may be the most comprehensive base running stat available — XtBGR.
You can get more information about the family of tBG stats at http://www.totalbasesgen.com. Their web page also provides links to over 25 reports, which highlight some of the most remarkable performances in baseball history—back to 1911.
Mike also plans to talk about some of the good and not-so-good performances in Baltimore baseball history during his presentation. Fun stuff!
Mike has been a SABR member for several years and is currently the VP of Communications for the SABR Connie Mack-Dick Allen chapter in Philadelphia. He has completed two of the SABR analytics courses, and he gave a presentation about tBG at the recent Saberseminar conference in Chicago.
