ONS is the country’s National Statistics Institute. We produce statistics that have a real impact on everyone, day in day out. We cover many aspects of life and the economy from GDP and Inflation to Population estimates, Crime and the Environment. We even tell you what the most popular baby names are! We aim to produce high quality statistics that are reproducible and transparent. In this seminar, Sarah will explain what Quality means, what the production cycle looks like, how Research and Development is incorporated into the factory production and what happens when things [sometimes] go wrong.

Sarah Henry - Director, Methodology and Quality Directorate, ONS

Sarah is Director for Methodology and Quality at ONS ensuring ONS is accountable for the quality of the statistics produced, using the best available methods.

She joined the Civil Service six years ago after a long stint in Local Government, overseeing research and performance at Manchester City Council and working on the Greater Manchester Devolution Deal, known as DevoManc.

Sarah is passionate about all things data – creation, analysis, visualisation and responsible use – all underpinned by the right methodology, of course.

The lecture is from 3-4pm and this will be followed by refreshments at 4-5pm just outside the lecture room.
