S-223 is orientation for EMTFs or EMPFs to the wildland fire environment. This course follows the FIRESCOPE guidelines (ICS 702) and OSFM FSTEP curriculum for a trainee EMTF or EMPF.
Topics include position overview; supplies and equipment; assignments; lessons learned; Medical Unit Leader expectations; communications; working with helicopters and REMS, documentation; navigation; safety; and medical issues related to wildland fire and providing care in remote locations.
Students should bring wildland gear (including IRPG) and (if available) a tool, for a training exercise the second day of class, weather permitting. Sessions will run from 0800 to no later than 1700 each day. A mobile device (phone or tablet) with Avenza installed will be very helpful for the field scenario. A programmable radio may be helpful.
Students completing the course will receive a certificate accepted by CICCS. (FSTEP registration may be available for an additional $75 fee, but is not required for this course until July 1, 2023).

Lead instructor, Nick Arnett, is an instructor at South Bay Regional Public Safety Academy, Medical Unit Leader on a federal Complex (formerly Type 1) Incident Management Team, Wilderness EMT, rope rescue technician, large animal rescue technician, and former paramedic, initially licensed in 1976. Students give excellent reviews for this course and his others including CERT, resilience, peer support, and crisis intervention for a number of agencies, including San Jose OEM, Milpitas Fire, and Santa Clara County Parks.
Arnett also supports federal, state, and local agencies with Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) and peer support services and instruction. He is the author of four books, including the most widely used public safety CISM pocket guide and the new release from HarperCollins Leadership, Stress Into Strength: Resilience Routines for Warriors, Wimps, and Everyone In Between.
