French baritone Stéphane Degout no longer needs any introduction. With his beautifully refined and wonderfully dramatically intense voice, and his strikingly expressive acting, he has conquered both international festivals and the most prestigious opera stages. Acclaimed in Geneva for his recital in 2021, and for the role of Rodrigue (Don Carlos) in 2023, he is making two returns to the city of Calvin: firstly to play the demanding and moving role of Wolfram (Tannhäuser), and then to offer a recital uniting the delicacy and sensitivity of his German Lied interpretation with French mélodie. A lover of poets, he has conceived a programme which glides along the Rhine, tinged with sweet melancholy. Imbued with a typically Romantic Sehnsucht, it begins with the poetry of Eichendorff set to music by Schumann, before building a bridge to French mélodie via the combination of Heine with Ropartz. From Baudelaire to Mallarmé, by way of Morand and Villon, the recital’s blossoming into French mélodie will see the subtle blending of the colours of Ravel, the Symbolism of Debussy, and the excess of Rita Strohl. In the image of the Romantic Wanderer, Stéphane Degout will guide us between spleen and ideal, accompanied by pianist Cédric Tiberghien.
