Festive season choiceCabaret
Our winter solstice screening is Cabaret at 7.00pm on Wednesday 17 December 2025 in the Jenny Kerry Performing Arts Centre, Ryde School PO33 3BE (Queen’s Road pedestrian entrance gate: use the entry code 2001#). Come early for drinks and mince pies (served from 6.30pm)! There will be a 5 minute introduction to the film.
Cabaret won eight Oscars in 1973: Best Directing, Best Actress, Best Actor in a Supporting Role, Best Music (Scoring: Adaptation & Original), Best Sound, Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing.
Director/choreographer: Bob Fosse (USA 1972). With Liza Minnelli, Michael York, Joel Grey, Helmut Griem, Marisa Berenson. Diegetic (source) score and lyrics by John Kander and Fred Ebb (including the chilling song Tomorrow belongs to me.)
Synopsis: Based on Christopher Isherwood’s semi-autobiographical 1939 novel Goodbye to Berlin (via John Van Druten’s play I Am a Camera). In 1931 Berlin, singer Sally Bowles (Liza Minnelli) and Brian Roberts (Michael York) have a complex relationship. Both become involved with playboy Maximilian von Heune (Helmut Griem). Sally refuses domesticity, Brian departs for England. In parallel, Fritz Wendel (Fritz Wepper) discloses his Jewish identity to marry Jewish heiress Natalia Landauer (Marisa Berenson). Meanwhile, Nazism is growing, as illustrated in the final scenes.
Cabaret lasts 2 hour 4 minutes. Certificate 15. In English.
