About this Event

This 2-day RYA course is designed to equip competent powerboat drivers with the skills needed when acting as an escort craft, safety boat or coach boat for a fleet of dinghies, windsurfers or canoes, or for racing or training activities.
It is also a pre-requisite for all RYA Senior Instructor courses.

It includes preparation, boat handling, rescue techniques for various types water craft, towing, end-of-day procedures, safety, suitability of craft, local factors, communication, rescuing other water users.

The course runs from 9:00am until 5:00pm each day (minimum 16 hours duration) and most sessions will be out on the water, hands-on, tackling different rescue scenarios. Our venue, Cheddar reservoir, is ideal for powerboat training as it offers enhanced safety and accessibility compared with similar courses in coastal locations.

The course is delivered by qualified RYA Powerboat and Safety Boat Instructors on behalf of Bristol Corinthian Yacht Club, an RYA Recognised Training Centre. The maximum student / Instructor ratio will be 6:1 (2 boats).

How Much Will it Cost?

The 2-day course fee includes the RYA course text "RYA Safety Boat Handbook (G16)". No other RYA publications are required for this course.

For current BCYC members the fee is reduced.

FAQs

What benefits are there in being RYA Safety Boat qualified?

You will be competent to provide safety or support cover to a range of craft, particularly sailing or windsurfing, in a variety of conditions.

Are there minimum age requirements?

Yes, to meet RYA requirements, the minimum age for this course is 16.

What should I wear?

We spend most of the day afloat, so please bring appropriate clothing for the weather. A dry suit or wet suit, with additional layers in cold weather, is recommended. YOU WILL PROBABLY GET WET!
Warm waterproofs are advised for the winter, plenty of sun cream in the summer. You will also need wet shoes/old trainers and a buoyancy aid (although we can provide one if you do not have your own).

Will there be a lunch break?

Tea and Coffee are provided, but you should bring a packed lunch. We will take a working lunch each day of 30 minutes.

Do I need to bring anything else to the course with me?

Evidence of your RYA Powerboat Level 2 Certificate will be required. Please bring this along with you at the start of the course.
A pen, pencil and notebook (waterproof if possible) will also be useful.

Do the organisers need any other information from me?

We need you to tell us about any medical conditions that might affect your safe participation on the course. Your instructor will need details of any medical treatment being received, or if you suffer from epilepsy, giddy spells, asthma, diabetes, heart condition, back problems or anything else you believe may affect you during your time with us. Please note that medical conditions need not prevent you from taking part, but it is important we are aware. If you are in any doubt about your fitness to take part in a practical powerboat course, your GP should be able to advise.
