Please join us for our monthly meeting on Thursday, February 19, 6:30 at the DEQ office in Salem: 901 Russell Drive, Salem.
Come around 6 to help us set up!
This month we welcome Mr. Fred Jones who will talk to us about "Preventing Swarms; A Decade of Learning from Failures".
“One reason so few beginning beekeepers succeed is that they face a double-edged sword. If they finally succeed in learning how to raise healthy bees, they face a whole new challenge: swarming. Entire books have been written on the subject, but this talk will center on preventing the swarm process from ever starting. As with many aspects of beekeeping, conventional wisdom often results in failure, and such is the case with swarm control. The prevention of swarms became a personal crusade for me over the years, and I have developed a system of prevention that works with the biology of honey bees rather than trying to fight against it. Surprisingly, it often works! I look forward to sharing my journey of discovery and hope that you might glean some ideas that will lead to greater success for your apiaries.”
Mr. Fred Jones has been keeping bees in Floyd County since 2011. He and his daughter currently care for 60 colonies used to support queen rearing as well as the production of nucs and honey. A past president of the New River Valley Beekeepers Association, Mr. Jones developed his ideas on managing bees through reading, mentoring new beekeepers and personal experience in his own apiaries. In the past he worked as a veterinarian, an EMT, a cook, and a sawmill operator. He and his wife of 46 years raised 4 children and practice a self-sufficient lifestyle on their land. In his spare time he is an avid long-distance hiker, a banjo player and an artist.
We hope you will join us for this exciting talk. You do not have to be a member to attend, everyone is welcome!
If you want to become a member, we will have membership forms you can fill out and pay the fee at the meeting!
