About this Event
**Just a reminder of the obvious. These tours do not mean that we support the current regime. I think the story of my life pretty much proves that. We study history and try to learn from the mistakes of the past**
Eldar Ryazanov (1927–2015) was one of the most celebrated Soviet filmmakers, renowned for his unique blend of humor, romance, and social critique. His films, often labeled as "lyrical comedies," captured the essence of Soviet life with a delicate balance of wit and heartfelt emotion.
This lecture introduces Ryazanov’s work, exploring how his films like Beware of the Car (1966), Garage (1979) and Say a Word for the Poor Hussar (1980) became cultural phenomena. Through vivid storytelling, memorable characters, and sharp satire, Ryazanov offered a poignant reflection of Soviet society—its dreams, struggles, and contradictions.
The session will also highlight the universal themes in his films, such as love, loneliness, and human connection, which continue to resonate with audiences worldwide.
