A Christmas Carol is Charles Dickens’s well-known tale of how the miserly Ebenezer Scrooge learns the importance of generosity towards all mankind and finally embraces the true spirit of Christmas.
His transformation is prompted by the appearance on Christmas Eve of the ghost of his old business partner, Jacob Marley, dragging a chain he forged in life by his greed and lack of charity. Three more ghosts follow, taking Scrooge on a journey through Christmases past, present and future, where Scrooge sees the error of his ways, how he has shunned those who loved him and placed wealth above all things, causing grief for everyone, and in particular the poor family of his employee Bob Cratchitt. He learns his possible fate, and that of Bob’s son, Tiny Tim, and is finally so overcome with grief and remorse that he determines to change his ways. Waking on Christmas morning, he is as good as his word, using his wealth to help the poor and spread cheer, starting with the Cratchitts and Tiny Tim, to whom he becomes a second father.
This adaptation is true to the original story, including all its familiar characters and scenes and plenty of traditional carols, to bring a Victorian Christmas to life.
