A new adaptation of Karol Capek's seminal science fiction play where the word robot was first used. R.U.R takes place on a remote island where the company Rossum's Universal Robots, has been making artificial people for several decades. An activist, and the President's daughter, comes to the island to free the robots from slavery and show them some humanity. In an attempt to make robots more like humans she inadvertently sews the seeds for the obliteration of the human race. This new adaptation feeds those offspring back into the parent and updates the story for a world where AI makes it hard to know what is real. Almost every robot story in science fiction originates with this 1920 play from Metropolis to Blade Runner and Westworld. Told with some humour, the tale takes a dark then hopeful turn. Science fiction for the stage is rare, and this is one of the first and the best.
