Showcasing wearable art pieces by two talented local artists, Kym Cunningham and Ruthie Purnell, who were among the 35 finalists at the recent Australian Wearable Art Festival on the Sunshine Coast.
The Australian Wearable Art Festival is an international event that brings together sculptural art, fashion and storytelling offering a platform for artists and designers to explore form, structure, texture, and colour using a mix of often unexpected materials.
Works on display showcase the imagination and details into the process of making these amazing wearable art pieces a journey that challenges our perceptions of where fashion ends and art begins.

This piece is a haunting love story – and a powerful symbol of our toxic romance with oil. With 159 million litres used globally each day, and ecosystems sacrificed for convenience, this garment reclaims landfill-bound waste to ask: What are we really trading for comfort? Can beauty rise from destruction?

‘𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿’
Inspired by Edgar Allan Poe’s The Raven, features a reflective appearance crafted from recycled crisp packets and silver materials. Stitched onto reclaimed curtains, layered with a mosquito net and bed valance petticoat, this wearable art piece compels viewers to reflect on sustainability. Echoing the raven’s ‘Nevermore’, it urges action to reduce waste before the chance to protect our world is lost.
