A place where one can feel safe and secure. A place where one can be with their loved ones. A home.It’s one of the most essential needs in life, and yet, millions of Filipinos don’t have access to it. According to 2021 data from the Department of Human Settlement and Urban Development (DHSUD), there are around 5.9 million informal settler families (ISF) in the Philippines.
To help provide Filipino families with quality homes, various Rotary Clubs in the country have teamed up to create a joint service project called Rotary Homes.
A Foundation that Builds Homes
The Rotary Homes District 3830 Development Foundation was established in 2010. It is duly registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), and the Philippine Council for NGO Certification (PCNC).
The foundation began when the local government of Parañaque sought the assistance of the Rotary to address the severe pollution of the Parañaque River, which is one of the country’s most contaminated bodies of water. For this endeavor, the Rotary helped in relocating ISFs along the riverbanks to help alleviate the pollution caused by their disposal of human waste and garbage. To date, they have already built 270 houses in Parañaque City — and 90 more are currently under construction in Muntinlupa and General Luna, Siargao Island.
The foundation's efforts also extend beyond just constructing homes. Their far greater mission is to help create a safe community for Filipino families. They are also involved in projects that offer values formation, livelihood training, and youth scholarships, among others.
Run, Ride, Rebuild
On April 14, 2024, they are slated to hold a running and biking event aptly titled “Run, Ride Rebuild: A Rotary Homes Charity Event” at the Pacific Rim, Filinvest City, Alabang, Muntinlupa City. This will be in partnership with and organized by Rule and Rich Events Management Services.
For this undertaking, runners can take part in three categories: 10k, 5k, and 3k. Meanwhile, cycling enthusiasts will have Open Men’s, Open Women’s, Senior Group, Executive Team, and Junior categories. The participants will have to cover a total of 20 kilometers, consisting of 10 loops of a two-kilometer ride.
Whether a runner or a biker is seasoned or novice, a hobbyist or a casual one, this event welcomes anyone who wants to move and help build a better future.
Rotary Homes believes that everyone deserves to have more than just a roof over their head — everyone deserves a place that they can call home. In “Run, Ride, Rebuild,” like-minded people will have the opportune time to get involved and make a difference in the lives of Filipinos who seek the comfort of a home.
