In 2020, Karen’s grandson Jaxon tragically took his own life just before his 17th birthday after struggling with mental health and depression. His passing was devastating for Karen and her family, and she was determined to help ensure that other children and teens had access to the resources and support they need.
Running track brought Jaxon comfort, so in his honor, Karen created Run a Mile for Jaxon with the goal of raising $50,000 for the Behavioral Health Unit at Dayton Children’s Hospital, set to open later this year. When Bruce heard about Karen’s mission, he volunteered to host the event at CrossFit SkyFall, where it was held for three years. Thanks to the incredible generosity of our community and others, not only did Karen surpass her goal—raising $62,000—but The Connor Group matched $50,000, bringing the total to an incredible $112,000 for the new Behavioral Health Unit.
Even though Karen has met her fundraising goal, we continue to honor Jaxon each year with a special WOD in his memory. Many of you who participated in past events purchased t-shirts to support the cause and have asked about continuing to do so. This year, in addition to the WOD, we’ll be selling t-shirts once again, with all proceeds going directly to the Behavioral Health Unit at Dayton Children’s Hospital.
Let’s come together, honor Jaxon’s memory, and continue making a difference. Use the link below to purchase your shirt! (Deadline for shirts is April 2nd)
