Jenn Schmalz will display her beautiful rugs for the day at Scott Manor House. Don't miss this great opportunity to view her outstanding work. Please see below information about Jenn and her interest in Rug Hooking.
'I like to think of myself as an accomplished amateur rug hooker.
My interest in this craft or art form came about entirely by fluke. Growing up in Summerside, PEI, I was no stranger to rug hookers and artists. My mother had been active in both areas since I was in middle school. Throughout high school and beyond I have been involved in art classes and so in 2012, after having just been downsized from a job, I added rug hooking to my list of hobbies.
Like most artists that try their hand at rug hooking, I soon developed my own style. Mine tends to be more painterly with an attention to values, shading and details. I draw my inspiration from our family travels; Amsterdam for its windmills, Florence for its domes, and the Atlantic for its oceans, to name a few.
For me rug hooking is relaxing. I approach each rug as a separate project where I gather my ideas, search for pictures and do some sketching to bring it all together on the page. The final product gets transferred to the linen, where I proceed to hook mostly with strips of wool and the occasional piece of yarn.
I hope you enjoy viewing my rugs, alongside some of my mother’s rugs, which I consider true treasures' - Jenn Schmalz.
